That Time I Met Gilbert Blythe

"Hey carrots...carrots!"

Oh Gilbert. Did any girl not have a crush on you at some point in their lives? I grew up watching Anne of Green Gables and reading the books and it is one of my all-time favourite movies. I laugh, I cry, and on occasion, I squeal like a schoolgirl. Can you fault me for being sentimental? When I was a kid we visited PEI and I was excited to see where the story takes place, and once I was Anne for Halloween.

A couple years ago I had the privilege of seeing Jonathan Crombie perform in a play and then I got to meet him afterwards. I  was so happy to meet "Gil". He was down to earth and charming and we talked a bit about the movie and theatre (although he said he didn't like Les Mis, which would totally have warranted me breaking a slate over his head if I had one). He was very nice and more than obliging to take a photo with me and sign pictures for myself and a couple friends. The movie and the memories associated with it are very dear to me.

But here’s where things get sobering. You see, the fact that he was in a great movie doesn’t really matter in the long run.The fact that he spent ten minutes talking with a fan or made girls all over the country swoon doesn’t really matter in the long run. The only thing that really matters is if Jesus was his Redeemer, his Lord, and his Friend. I hope someone told him about Jesus and I wish I had spent even just one of those 10 minutes to do so.

Friends, in 100 years it’s not going to really matter what school you went to, how much money you made, or how attractive your significant other was (or if you even had one). The only thing that is really going to matter is if you know Jesus Christ. I’m not saying you should do nothing with your life, but rather urging you to make it matter. God made you, loves you, and died for you and I though you don’t deserve it and I most certainly don’t. When we draw our last breath He will still be reigning eternally. A life knowing Him and making Him known is never wasted, and we can be with our Creator forever.

May my heart say to God, "I don't want diamond sunbursts or marble halls; I just want You."

John 17:3
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
